You have questions. That’s completely okay.
Senior living can feel like a whole new world, and you’re not expected to know how all of this works. We’ve answered some of the questions families ask us most often below.
Still unsure? Just tell us what’s going on. We’ll help you figure out the next step

Altera helps families navigate the search for senior living and the transition that comes with it. We get to know your loved one, help you understand care options, identify communities that may be a good fit, coordinate tours and communication, and help keep the next steps moving.
Think of us as an extra set of hands — and two people in your corner — during a time that can quickly become overwhelming.
-
Our senior living placement guidance is provided at no cost to families.
When a family chooses a participating senior living community through Altera, we may receive a referral fee from that community. We believe in being transparent about how our services work and are always happy to answer questions about this.
-
Altera simply makes the process easier.
Instead of spending hours researching, making calls, comparing communities and trying to figure out what questions to ask, we help do the legwork with you.
And because our placement guidance is provided at no cost to families, you can have a local mother-daughter team helping you navigate the process without adding another placement expense.
-
Yes.
Altera is intentionally personal. We're a mother-daughter owned and operated company, not a national call center. When you reach out, you work directly with our team.
We want to know your family's story, understand what's important to you and be there in person whenever possible throughout the process.

We can help families explore options including:
Independent Living • Assisted Living • Memory Care • CBRF • RCAC • Skilled Nursing • Respite Care
Not sure which one your loved one needs? That's okay. Helping you understand the options is part of what we're here for.
-
We start with the person — not a list.
We consider your loved one's care needs, cognitive needs, personality, preferences, desired location, budget, lifestyle and what's important to your family. From there, we help identify options that may be appropriate and available.
The goal isn't simply to find an opening. It's to help find the right fit.
-
No. The decision is always yours.
Our role is to help you understand your options, gather information and make the process easier. Your family ultimately decides where your loved one feels most comfortable.
-
Yes — that's actually one of the things that makes Altera, Altera.
We believe some decisions are better navigated side by side. When possible, we'll help coordinate tours and be there in person to help you ask questions, compare options and keep track of the details.
-
Reach out.
Sometimes a change happens gradually. Other times, a hospitalization, rehabilitation stay, fall or change in care needs means a family has to make decisions much sooner than expected.
Tell us what's happening and your timeline, and we'll help determine what options and next steps may be available.

Finding the community is only part of the transition.
Altera can help keep communication and next steps organized as you work toward move-in, including coordinating with the family, community and other professionals involved.
We don't want you to feel like you're suddenly on your own once you've made a decision.
-
Yes. Senior living often comes with a whole list of other needs.
Through our network of Trusted Partners, we can help connect families with local professionals who may assist with things like moving, downsizing, senior real estate, home care, home health, hospice, elder law and other services.
-
You can still call us.
You don't have to be ready to move next week — or even know whether senior living is the right next step.
Sometimes the best place to start is simply having a conversation about what you're noticing, what you're worried about and what options may exist.
There is no pressure to have everything figured out before reaching out.
